Andy Wiener and Brian Whitlock combined for nine goals Saturday, leading the Los Altos High boys water polo team to an 11-6 win over Palo Alto in the SCVAL De Anza Division Tournament championship.

Wiener scored five goals and Whitlock four in a victory that earned the Eagles an automatic berth in the upcoming Central Coast Section playoffs.

Los Altos got out to a 2-0 lead, as Whitlock converted a back-handed shot on the first possession; Kevin Buurma soon followed with a goal of his own.

The Eagles led 9-6 at intermission, then kept the Vikings at bay with two goals by Wiener and some stellar defense.

“During the second half the entire team came together to put the game away,” defender John Sines said. “We really stepped up our defense to shut them out like we did.”

Whitlock and Wiener were quick to praise goalie Jon Young, who made several difficult saves in the second half.

This marks the first time in school history Los Altos has gone undefeated in division play.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
