By Gorilla Foundation visits Fed women

Dee Ann Draper, a research assistant with the Gorilla Foundation, will be the guest speaker at the Federated Woman’s Club of Los Altos luncheon meeting today at Michael’s Restaurant at Shoreline.

With illustrations and photos, she will talk about the history of the foundation and the care and training of Ko-Ko and Michael, two gorillas who can communicate with sign language and perform works of art. The business meeting will start at 11 a.m., with a luncheon following. Guests are welcome. For more information, call 948-3553.

Zylbert to discuss gender bias in academia

The Los Altos-Mountain View Branch of the American Association of University Women will meet 7:30-9 p.m., Nov. 14, in the Council Chambers of Mountain View City Hall, 500 Castro St. The guest speaker will be Dr. Barbara Zylbert, graduate of Stanford Medical School, who has filed a gender bias lawsuit against the University. Her topic is the issue of prejudicial treatment of women in academia.

Museum looking for W.W. II photos

In preparing for a Nov. 18 Music & Memories show titled, “Los Altos’ Greatest Generation on Battlefield and Homefront,” members of the Los Altos History Museum are looking for photos of young men and women in World War II uniform.

The event will honor these Los Altos soldiers in keeping with Veterans’ Day and the upcoming 60th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. In addition, any photos of homefront efforts - “Rosie the Riveters” - would be appreciated.

Levitin to speak on girls in science

The Technology and Society Committee’s biweekly luncheon will be held 11:45 a.m., Tuesday, at the Golden Wok Restaurant, 895 Villa St., Mountain View. The speaker, Beth Levitin, executive director of the Math/Science Network and national coordinator of Expanding Your Horizons conferences, will describe the flagship program of the Math/Science Network, Expanding Your Horizons in Science and Mathematics. CSA looking for volunteers

The Community Services Agency of Mountain View, Los Altos and Los Altos Hills is looking for volunteers to help provide food to low-income families this Thanksgiving and throughout the holiday season. Volunteers will receive, sort and organize food donations for distribution to families, seniors and the homeless.

Opportunities are 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or 12:30-4:30 p.m., weekdays, Monday through Dec. 21. To volunteer or for more information, call Penny Morehead at 964-4630 or 968-0836.

Out To Lunch needs mentors

Out to Lunch, started by Partners For New Generations, connects caring adults with high school students who need support. The program is currently looking for mentors.

The program has recently received funding from the Los Altos Community Foundation to hire a part-time psychologist. The psychologist will select students for the program, match students with mentors based on common interests, monitor the students’ progress and train mentors.

Benefit for music in the schools

Local piano teachers Janet Smith, Angela Coons, Susan Bratman and Nancy Hiller are scheduled to perform a benefit concert for the Music in the Schools Foundation to provide music education for East Palo Alto students. The concert is slated for 8 p.m., Saturday, at the Palo Alto Arts Center, 1313 Embarcadero Road, Palo Alto.

Cost is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $8 for students.

Los Altos Scout Troop 33, founded in 1952 by the Los Altos United Methodist Church, will celebrate 50 years of scouting with a reunion scheduled for Feb. 10.
