The Los Altos High School Pumpkin Patch runs through today in the parking lot of the school, 201 Almond Ave. Proceeds go toward the Eagles’ athletic programs. Pumpkin patch hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

PONY up for baseball

Sign ups for Los Altos-Mountain View PONY Baseball are in progress for boys and girls ages 5-18. For information on how to register by mail, call 568-1044 or logon to the league’s Web site at www.lapb.org. In-person registration is scheduled for two Los Altos locations: 7-9 p.m., Jan. 8, at Loyola School; and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Jan. 12, at Covington School.

Victory celebration

The San Jose CyberRays Fan Appreciation Day is set for 2:30-5 p.m., Sunday, at Spartan Stadium in San Jose. In addition to musical entertainment and an autograph session with players, there will be CyberRays merchandise on sale, including surplus game jerseys. The CyberRays, which have St. Francis High graduate Gina Oceguera on their roster and former Pinewood School and Gunn High athletic director Christie Eustice in their front office, recently won the Women’s United Soccer Association’s inaugural championship. Swimming along

West Bay Water Polo Club is offering a Winter Swim Camp to improve students’ swimming ability. The camp, for swimmers of all levels in grades 7-12, includes swimming and weightlifting. The camp runs Dec. 3 through Jan. 21 at Los Altos High. Times: swimming 3:30-5 p.m., weekdays; weights 5-5:30 p.m., Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Cost is $200. Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
