Foothill College Sports Roundup

The Foothill College football team better hope it didn’t play its best game of the year last Saturday in a 41-7 rout of host Cabrillo.

That’s because the Owls will have to play as well - or perhaps even better - to beat this week’s opponent.

Foothill hosts undefeated City College of San Francisco, the top-ranked team in the nation, at 1 p.m., Saturday.

“We need to play at our best on both sides of the ball and play mistake-free football,” Owls coach Marshall Sperbeck said. “We have to step up to the challenge and try to knock them off.”

The last time Foothill knocked off the Rams: 1995. Last year the Owls fell 29-2.

Both teams enter Saturday’s game tied atop the NCFA Golden Gate Division with 2-0 records. Foothill is 5-2 overall; San Francisco 7-0.

Foothill has blown out its last two opponents by a combined score of 76-14, racking up more than 400 yards of offense in each outing.

Against Cabrillo, the Owls piled up 458 yards and scored on six of their nine possessions, including all four of their first-half drives.

Los Altos High graduate Steven Holloway, in his second start at halfback, surpassed the 200-yard mark for the second week in a row. The freshman rushed for 201 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. He also caught a pass for 17 yards.

Gunn grad Kenny Coleman led all Foothill receivers with four catches for 68 yards and three touchdowns.

Quarterback Waye Terry completed 12 of 22 passes for 152 yards and four touchdowns.

The Owls defense limited Cabrillo to 205 yards and didn’t allow a score until the fourth quarter.

At last! A competitive MVLA election

Back in 1998, Silicon Valley was the new gold rush, Google was in its infancy and the Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District held its last competitive school board election.
