Elizabeth Foster, a former Los Altos resident, died Sept. 30. She was a native of Indiana.

Mrs. Foster graduated from Ball State College in Indiana. She later became a high school business teacher.

Mrs. Foster was predeceased by her husband, Bob Foster, who died last year, and her brother, Don. She is survived by her children, Marilyn Marley and Phyllis Satter; sister, Mary Ruth Hinshaw; grandchildren, Jory Johnson, Brian Johnson and Robert Marley; and two great-grandchildren.

Faith Kenney

Faith Kenney died Sept. 30. A native of Iowa, she was 87.

She was the widow of Benjamin T. Kenney. She is survived by her children, Mike Kenney of Mountain View and Sherrill Stone; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Sydney Yukiye Noda Bartell

Sydney Yukiye Noda Bartell died unexpectedly Oct. 10 at her Los Altos home. A native of Denver, she was 57.

Ms. Bartell was a retired registered nurse. She grew up in the Central Valley. She attended the San Jose Hospital School of Nursing and was certified by the state of California as an RN.

Ms. Bartell is survived by her brothers, Eric Noda and his wife Charlotte Lewis, and Bruce Noda. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Grace Noda.

Thelma Fredlund

Thelma Fredlund died Oct. 12 in Los Altos. A native of Wisconsin, she was 81.

Mrs. Fredlund attended the University of Washington, graduating with a home economics degree in 1943.

She was a four-year resident of the students co-op association, where she met her husband. After World War II, Mrs. Fredlund lived in Seattle for 10 years. She later moved to Palo Alto, where she earned a teaching credential at San Jose State University in 1962. She taught elementary school for 17 years at Eisenhower School in the Cupertino Union School District.

Mrs. Fredlund was active in the Daughters of Norway Lodge, PEO Sisterhood, Palo Alto First United Methodist Church and AAUW. She is survived by her husband, Ronald Fredlund of Los Altos; sons, David, Larry and Robert of Mountain View; nephew, Richard Daniels; and six grandchildren.

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
