By Common Ground offers Saturday classes

Common Ground Organic Gardening Supply and Education Center has scheduled two November Saturday classes at its new storefront, 559 College Ave., Palo Alto.

Mike Shannon, a former Ecology Action Research Garden apprentice, is slated to lead “Garden Planning,” 10:30 a.m. to noon, Saturday. Shannon will assist participants in planning next season’s garden and show how to determine space needed and plant yield. Bring a pencil and calculator. Worksheets will be provided. Cost is $17. Advance registration is required.

Local landscape designer and horticulturist Patricia St. John is set to hold a wreath-making workshop, 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Nov. 10. Cost is $27. Learn how to make an evergreen wreath for your door, wall or holiday table. Evergreens (pine, fir, redwood, cedar), berries, pine cones and more will be provided, but if you have access to any of the above, bring them. Ribbon, the wire frame and wire and additional materials will be provided. Bring clippers and wire cutter if you have them. Advance registration is required.

St. Francis ‘Christmas at Our House’ starts Nov. 29

The Saint Francis Women’s Club will host their 13th annual holiday home tour this year featuring four homes in Los Altos Hills.

Festivities for “Christmas at Our House” begin at 5 p.m., Nov. 29, with a Twilight Tour and gala preview party. On Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 the homes are open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Guests will be treated to live entertainment performed by Saint Francis student musicians and vocalists.

The popular “Christmas Gift Shoppe” is stocked for shoppers with treasures from around the world created by more than 30 local artisans and craftspersons.

Santa’s Drawing Room features a selection of holiday items to be won in a donation drawing at the end of the tour.

Visitors can enjoy a brief respite with a complimentary tea offering refreshments of homemade baked goods, eggnog, hot cider and coffee.

Tickets are available for the “Twelfth Night” table setting including a complete service for eight with china and crystal, linens, centerpiece, flatware and table decor valued at more than $5,000.

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
