By Town Crier Staff Report
Students enrolled in the Foothill College Drama Department are staging “Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All To You” and “The Actor’s Nightmare” in the Studio Theater at Foothill College.
The production, which opened last week, runs through Nov. 11. Remaining show times are 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday; 2 p.m., Sunday; 8 p.m., Nov. 8-10; and 2 p.m., Nov. 11.
Both critically acclaimed one-act plays are by award-winning contemporary American playwright Christopher Durang.
The cast includes locals Greg Villeneuve (Los Altos Hills) and Steven Lone (Mountain View).
“The Actor’s Nightmare” is a farce in which an ordinary non-actor, George, wanders onto a theater stage. The leading actor has been injured and George, mistaken for the understudy, is thrust into the show’s spotlight. George finds himself in humorous sendups of famous plays, including “Private Lives,” “Hamlet” and “Endgame.”
“Sister Mary” focuses its satire around an authoritarian nun, visited by four former students of her ironhanded rule and dogma. Each has a disturbing story to tell of the effects of Sister Mary’s life instruction and the play’s humor turns dark.
Because of mature themes, these plays are not recommended for children.
Foothill drama instructor Janis Bergmann directs “The Actor’s Nightmare.” A professional actor, she teaches a range of theater courses at Foothill and leads the Foothill College Theatre Conservatory.
Foothill drama instructor Jay Manley directs “Sister Mary.” A Bay Area Theatre Critics award-winning director, he also leads Foothill Music Theatre and directed productions of “Show Boat” and “Into the Woods.”
Tickets are $13 general and $11 students/seniors.
Parking in lots 1, 5 or 6 is free during the performance. Visitors must buy a $2 parking permit for other campus lots.
Foothill is located at 12345 El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills.
