By Town Crier Staff Report
In remembrance of the victims of Sept. 11, 10 major South Bay community choirs will come together Saturday at Stanford University’s Memorial Church for a performance of Fauré’s “Requiem.”
Proceeds from the 8 p.m. concert will benefit the Liberty Disaster Relief Fund of the American Red Cross.
The program will feature soloists Sandra Hart, soprano, Leroy Kromm, baritone, and Robert Huw Morgan, organist, and will also include a performance of selected works by the Stanford Chamber Chorale.
The event is free, but the audience will be encouraged to donate to the American Red Cross Liberty Disaster Relief Fund after the performance.
Gregory Wait, music director of both the Stanford Memorial Church Choir and Schola Cantorum, will conduct the assembled musicians.
“Fauré’s ‘Requiem’ is a work that embodies a sense of serenity, consolation and confidence that is so needed in these difficult times,” Wait said. “It offers a chance for contemplation and reflection, and is as much a celebration for the living as it is a requiem for those who have lost their lives.”
This concert will mark one of the largest-ever choral collaborations in the South Bay/Peninsula. Participating choirs include Baroque Choral Guild, Don Haneke Chorale, Oratorio Society, Peninsula Cantare, San Jose Choral Project, San Jose Symphonic Choir, Santa Clara Chorale, Schola Cantorum, Stanford Chamber Chorale and Stanford Memorial Church Choir.
All musicians taking part - singers, orchestral players, and guest soloists - are donating their time and talent for the memorial concert.
Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors open at 7:15 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early.
