By County prepares for terrorist attacks

Due to the potential threat of terrorists’ retaliatory attacks, the Santa Clara County Office of Emergency Services opened its command center last week in a partial activation, readying its public safety services for potential emergencies, County Executive Richard Wittenberg announced Oct. 7.

The command center was partially open last week, with county officials and key agency personnel on hand. Santa Clara Valley Medical Center was also on high alert, prepared to respond to demands on emergency medical services.

The county is also concerned about possible civil unrest and backlash against the local Muslim community.

The center will remain on alert as a precautionary measure, Wittenberg said.

Air district seeks candidates

The Board of Directors of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District is searching for applicants for the district’s advisory council. The council advises and consults with the board of directors and the executive officers on matters related to air pollution. Council members receive no salary, but are given expenses incurred in the discharge of duties.

The 20-member council includes residents representing specific interest groups.

Applications are being sought for the following categories: industry, transportation, parks and recreation and regional park districts. The board is also accepting applications for advisory council categories that are presently filled to create a candidate pool should vacancies occur.

The application deadline is Nov. 9.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
