Variety store opens at former Kahn’s pharmacy site
The new store in the old Kahn’s Corner Pharmacy site at 200 Main St. is “Sassy.” It’s an eclectic store for all ages - at reasonable prices.
“The stuff we carry is fun,” said Tina Kim, store manager. “Wigs, hats for all occasions and accessories that can make a person feel good.”
Sassy in Los Altos is the third store in a small chain. The others are in Pinole and on Market Street in San Francisco. Each stocks unique items catering to the differing clientele. The Los Altos store will be more conservative and utilitarian, management said.
Kim graduated from Los Altos High School in 1991 and works for her mother, Choon Kang, the owner of the store. The family lived in Los Altos for 14 years.
“When I went to high school, there wasn’t a store like this anywhere,” Kim said. “What we carry now is chic and it’s what the kids want to wear today.
“I’m glad to be back,” said Kim. “The people were always nice to us here. I’m glad they haven’t changed and the town’s still the same after being away 10 years.”
Kang has been in business 26 years with the same type of store. The merchandise is targeted for the younger set but also includes casual clothing and dress suits for women.
“Although the store is stocked now, we expect to carry a lot more and different merchandise within a few weeks,” Kim said. “The changes will come with our variety and what the people are receptive to. We’ve been open a week and we are selling a lot of different stuff.”
Call Sassy a one-stop store for special occasions. It’s a place to buy unusual gifts or surprises to liven up a dinner party.
With Halloween only two weeks away, Sassy features Halloween accessories, such as wigs and hats, costume jewelry and hair accessories, to enhance clever costumes.
“You wear a hat and you become a new personality,” Kim said. “Wear a wig and you become a new person.”
