Milpitas 48, Gunn 0

With the loss of key personnel from a season ago and a huge move up to the SCVAL De Anza Division, youthful Gunn (0-2, 2-4) knew league wins would come at a premium.

Last Friday night, the Titans’ league woes continued in a convincing setback at Milpitas (2-0, 4-2). The loss came off the heels of a 56-7 loss to Los Gatos the prior week.

The gutsy Titans hung tough with the talented Trojans for the first 21 minutes, trailing 14-0. Then the floodgates opened.

In the final three minutes of the second half, Milpitas erupted for three touchdowns via an 11-yard blocked punt for a touchdown, a 60-yard fumble recovery for a score and a 37-yard touchdown pass for a commanding 34-0 halftime lead.

Gunn looks for its initial De Anza Division win against Santa Clara at 7:30 p.m., Friday, at Foothill College.

Fremont 31, Homestead 7

With a win over Fremont last Friday, Homestead (1-2, 2-4) had a chance to move up the SCVAL El Camino Division standings and remain in contention for the title.

Instead, the Mustangs fell flat in a disappointing loss to the host Firebirds (2-1, 3-3).

The Mustangs hope to get back on the winning track at 7:30 p.m., Friday, against Lynbrook (2-4) at Cupertino High.

Bye for St. Francis

The football teams from Gunn and Homestead highs each took severe hits last weekend, which probably cost both programs any shot at a respective league championship and a Central Coast Section playoff berth.

Now, the focus will be on improving with each game and playing the role of spoiler.

Following a big win over previously unbeaten Riordan in its West Catholic Athletic League opener two weeks ago, St. Francis (1-0, 2-4) had a bye last weekend.

The Lancers hope the time off allowed them to prepare for a key WCAL match-up against host St. Ignatius at 1 p.m., Saturday.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
