Celebrating 50 Years of Friendship and Partnership:
A Los Altos Hills couple joint select company at a recent gala dinner commemorating the 50th anniversary signing of the San Francisco Peace Treaty between the United States and Japan. Dr. Gary Cleary and his wife, Nobuko Saito Cleary were among those gathered on Sept. 8 in the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco, to celebrate 50 years of friendship. Guest speakers included Colin Powell, United States secretary of state; George P. Shultz, former secretary of state; Howard Baker, United States ambassador to Japan; Shunji Yanai, ambassador of Japan to the United States; Ko Nishimura, chairman, president and CEO of Solectron Corp.; and Norman Y. Mineta, U.S. secretary of transportation.
A Special visit from former Los Altans: Linda and Doug Lanterman were in town recently from Lake of the Pines to visit “old neighbors.” Many close friends, Judy and Jim Mutch, Jan and Stoney Edwards, Janice Matsumura, Jane and Ron Stefani, and Marilyn Shodiss planned the special get-together potluck dinner which was held at the Woodland Vista Swim and Racquet Club. Other guests were Ann and Jim Wall, Wallis and Harry Leslie, Mary and Len Martin, Ed Irvin, Barbara Guard, and Natalie and Norm Pond.
The couple were house guests of Shodiss, a longtime friend and former neighbor.
Linda has written two great books, “The Writing Lesson” and “Not Nice.”
“Many of my friends helped with early drafts of the books,” said Linda. The books can be ordered online at lstbooks.com.
Doug has an exciting hobby, too. He has been sailing small model sailboats for at least 12 years. While visiting friends here, he also participated in the “National Championship Regatta for Radio Control Sailboats” event held at the Hellyer Park in San Jose. He placed sixth in the race! Doug and David Rosseau (former Los Altan) started a group at Lake of the Pines.
Linda and Doug’s two sons both live at Lake of the Pines. Dr. John, his sons, Bentley and Davis, and youngest son, Jeff and wife, Angela, their daughter, Alexa, all live close by. It’s called “the family affair!”
This is a sad time for all of us. We all mourn the tragic loss of innocent lives, and our hearts go out to the families and communities devastated by the recent events that befell our nation and the entire civilized world. While knowing we’ll cope, our hope is to begin the very long process of healing and reflection.
We will all stand united, and help one another go on with our lives. We are blessed to be Americans!
