Al Hastings’ red 1957 Jaguar XK140 Roadster was one of this year’s winners at the Classic Car Show, held Oct. 6 and 7 in conjunction with the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce Fall Festival.

Several classic cars, ranging from 1913 and 1915 Ford Model T’s and a 1915 Franklin to 1960s Shelbys, were on display both days.

Award recipients in the open class were: Bev Ferreira, 1948 Tucker; Sam Cambouris, 1967 Buick Riviera; Bill Daskarolis, 1967 Olds 442 Convertible; Mickey Jones, 1955 Jaguar; Ed Wildanger, 1930 Ford Woodie; David Stoner, 1915 Ford Touring Car; Al Hastings, 1957 Jaguar; and Rod Madariaga, 1932 Ford 5-Window Coupe.

A special class was sponsored by the Los Altos Town Crier. These cars were last year’s open class award recipients and were judged by the Town Crier staff. The Town Crier Awards, presented by Liz and Paul Nyberg, were given to Ted Wuerthner’s 1936 Mercedes, John Viscovich’s 1932 Ford Phaeton and Manuel Fortes’ 1928 Buick Touring Car.

The Chairman’s Award, for the entry of special spectator interest, was presented to Doug Jackson for his Batmobile.

The classic car show was part of a successful fall festival, according to organizers at the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce.

SCARECROW CONTEST WINNERS: The event also included a scarecrow coloring contest featuring participating students from local elementary and high schools.

The winners of the contest as judged by the Town Crier were: pre-kindergarten, Niles Lee; kindergarten to second grade, Davis Brown; third to sixth grade, Jennifer Bakos; and seventh to 12th grade, Christina Holst.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
