After losing a number of talented athletes from last season, coach Ken Green knew this year’s Los Altos High football team would be raw.
The Eagles are a work in progress, desperately looking for consistency and their first victory.
Los Altos (0-1, 0-3) yielded too many yards on the ground and couldn’t find any offensive continuity in a 28-10 SCVAL El Camino Division-opening loss to Monta Vista (1-0, 2-2) on Friday night at Cupertino High. Los Altos has been outscored 87-17 in its three losses.
Los Altos’ rush defense was generous to the Matadors, yielding 306 yards. All but two of Monta Vista’s plays from scrimmage were rushing attempts.
After Monta Vista raced out to a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter, Los Altos cut the margin to 7-3, thanks to a Mike Calonica 24-yard field goal. Yet, the Matadors would utilize its strong rushing game to tally 14 unanswered points for a 21-3 advantage early in the third quarter.
The Eagles shaved the lead to 21-10 on a 40-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Shawn Girouard to receiver Thomas Roux with 9:24 remaining in the third quarter.
Los Altos hopes to get its initial win of the season 7:30 p.m., Friday, against Homestead at Foothill College.
De La Salle 42, St. Francis 0
St. Francis (1-4) dropped its fourth consecutive game, this time to host De La Salle of Concord in a non-league contest last Friday night.
De La Salle, ranked No. 1 in some national polls, extended its national record win streak to a mind-boggling 116 games.
The Lancers, whose record is deceiving due to a brutal non-league schedule, held their own in a scoreless first quarter. Then the Spartans (4-0) went to work.
De La Salle tallied a pair of second quarter touchdowns to grab a 14-0 halftime lead, then widened the margin to 35-0 after three quarters.
St. Francis hopes to get back on the winning track Friday at 7:30 p.m. when it hosts Riordan in a West Catholic Athletic League opener.
Cupertino 14, Homestead 7
Homestead scored on its first offensive series, then couldn’t generate any more points in a tough loss to Cupertino in an SCVAL El Camino Division opener at Fremont High.
The Mustangs (0-1, 1-3) lit up the scoreboard on their first drive when quarterback Brandon Dougherty hit receiver Garren Strong on a 66-yard touchdown pass for a 7-0 lead.
From there, Cupertino (1-0, 2-2) used its effective rushing game and controlled the clock en route to victory.
With the game tied 7-7 at the half, Homestead didn’t have many opportunities in the second half, running only 15 plays from scrimmage.
