By New fire station opens in Cupertino

The Santa Clara County Fire Department is scheduled to hold a ceremony for the opening of the new Cupertino fire station 10 a.m., Oct. 4, at 20215 Stevens Creek Boulevard.

Construction of the new station began in June 1999 adjacent to the old station, which was damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake.

The new station is 13,000 square feet and includes a tower commemorating the old Calli Brothers Company that was located across the street from the original fire station. The front entrance is designed to display some of the county’s fire history.

The Santa Clara County Fire Department serves the Los Altos and Los Altos Hills areas.

Transmission replacement begins

Peninsula

Mountain View launched a yearlong project Monday intended to improve the city’s water service.

The Miramonte Transmission Main Replacement Project involves replacing two miles of old 16-inch pipe with a new 24-inch pipe.

Work will occur primarily on Miramonte Avenue and Shoreline Boulevard near the Los Altos city limit.

In order to minimize traffic delays, the city plans to build the project in phases, beginning at the north end, near the Caltrain railroad tracks and moving south. City officials anticipate some localized traffic disruptions, such as lane closures and detours.

The contractor, MJB Pipeline of Hayward, is required to provide access to homes and businesses at all times and will deliver a written notice to each property owner before construction work begins. For more information, call Kip Anderson at 903-6439.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

When members of the Los Altos Village Association first created the summer movie nights, they anticipated an event that would attract more residents downtown as a way to promote business.

What they didn’t anticipate was an influx of middle schoolers, or that parents would use the weekly Friday night affair as an opportunity to drop off their children and have someone else (in this case, the Village Association) effectively watch over them.
