Almond School
The sixth-graders of Almond School showed their support Sept. 14 for those whose lives were affected by the attacks on New York and Washington, D.C. At recess, a large group of the 10- to 12-year-olds, clad in red, white, and blue, gathered to display their colors. There were all types of shirts with flags on them and many of the students were holding up miniature flags they had brought from home. To show further patriotism, the sixth-graders spent their recess parading across the blacktop singing the national anthem.
That’s not the only time the words of the “Star Spangled Banner” ring across the campus. Every morning since the terrorists hit, Andrea Cano’s sixth-grade class has started off the day with song.
The sixth grade is also selling pins and ribbon bouquets, available during and right after school. All profits will go directly to New York public schools.
Although the students know how to be lively in their support, they can also be silent in remembrance. At 12:30 p.m., a bell signaled a moment of silence in memory of those whose lives have been affected by terrorist attacks. During the quiet time, a large group of sixth-graders sat in a circle on the field, facing a collection of flags and other patriotic symbols.
This is a very difficult and tragic time for all of us and we’re doing all we can to help those near the site of the attack. You can also help by donating money to schools and hospitals in New York.
