In recent years, outdoor decks have grown in popularity. You can find a variety of styles in Los Altos and Los Altos Hills. However, deck owners are busy and neglect the need for regular maintenance.
Few house additions are as welcome as an exterior deck, because it invites dawdling, grilling of steaks, conversation and an extra hour with the Sunday paper. However, before the last nail goes in, nature is already hard at work to destroy it.
In many cases, refinishing and sealing of the decks are necessary to keep them in good condition. Neglect leaves its marks, which show up as dark mildew stains, cracked railings and nails protruding over the surface.
Following are some tips on making sure the deck is cleaned and refinished properly:
A common problem is popped nails where the nailheads are jutting above the surface of the wood. Pound them back in or replace them with deck screws. Repair railing and deck boards for looseness.
When repairs are completed, the deck is ready for cleaning. Most cleaners are basically bleaching agents such as sodium hypochlorite or oxalic acid. Bleaches tighten and brighten the wood and remove mildew stains.
A deck sprayer, much like a compressed-air garden sprayer, is the easiest and best way to apply a cleaner. After cleaning, let the deck dry out completely, which usually takes a day or two.
Three types of finishing treatments are recommended for decks: clear sealers; semitransparent stains; and toners or lightly toned stains.
Paint and solid-color stains are seldom recommended for decks because they have a tendency to peel.
A high-quality semitransparent stain such as Cabot’s Decking Stain can often retain its color for three years or more (800-877-8246).
Wood Protector Color Finish by Thompson’s comes in several tones (800-367-6297).
Follow directions on the container for applying finishes.
Take care of your deck if you want outdoor enjoyment.
