By Halloween window painting contest
The 38th Annual Halloween Window Painting Contest, sponsored by the City of Los Altos Recreation Department, in cooperation with the Los Altos Village Association, will be held Oct. 25-27. The contest is open to all fourth- through eighth-grade students. Applications can be obtained from the Los Altos Recreation Department, 97 Hillview Ave. Completed application forms must be received by 5 p.m., Oct. 17.

Cheetah fund-raiser at Foothill College
The Cheetah Conservation Fund will hold its “Run For Survival” fund-raising event Sunday at Foothill College.
The program starts at 11 a.m. in the auditorium, with a slide presentation by Laurie Marker, followed at 12:15 p.m. by a presentation of wild cats. The Run for Survival will be 1-4 p.m., l, in the stadium. Admission is $15, presentation only; $25, run only; and $30, both events. Fees for children, 5-12 years, are $10 for the presentation, $15 for both events.
A catered reception, with live cats, wildlife art and Marker’s presentation, will be held 3-6 p.m., Sept. 29. Admission is $100 per person. Preregistration is required. For more information, call (408) 354-4035 or logon to www.cheetah.org.
Local heroes of open space
The “Heroes of the Peninsula Open Spaces” exhibit is on through Nov. 4 at the Los Altos History Museum.
The exhibit addresses common questions, such as “What is open space?” “Why is open space important?” “Who made open space happen?” and “When did open space begin to be preserved?” It concludes with “What can I do to help preserve open spaces?”

AARP meeting addresses health care
The Los Altos AARP September meeting will be held 1 p.m., Thursday, at the Los Altos Senior Center, Room 12, 97 Hillview Ave.
Wally Ebright, AARP assistant state coordinator for Health and Care will discuss health-care concerns and answer questions about insurance.
Refreshments and entertainment wll follow the program. Sign-in begins at 12:30 p.m. Open to the public.
A look into life before Silicon Valley
The Federated Woman’s Club of Los Altos will hold its monthly luncheon meeting Oct. 3 at Michael’s restaurant at Shoreline, Mountain View.
The business meeting will begin at 11 a.m., with luncheon and program following.
Yvonne Olson Jacobson, daughter of the Olson family whose cherry stand has been on El Camino in the same location since the 1920s, will be the guest speaker.
She will review and show slides of her book, “Passing Farms: Enduring Values,” written in 1984, and soon to be re-released. The book is about the lost way of life in the Santa Clara Valley as it was before the orchards gave way to suburbs and freeways.

Behind the scenes with San Jose Rep
John McCluggage, associate artistic director of the San Jose Repertory Theater, will present a lecture and video, “Architecting a Play,” at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 3, at the Los Altos main library, sponsored by the Friends of the Los Altos Library. The program describes taking an idea for a play from concept through presentation on stage, involving many behind-the-scenes steps.
Included in the talk will be the concept and creative process, casting, technology and rehearsal requirements up to the opening night.
After the lecture, there will be a drawing for several pairs of tickets.
Hidden Villa seeking farm guides
Hidden Villa Farm in Los Altos Hills needs volunteers one morning a week to guide the nearly 20,000 schoolchildren who are expected to visit the farm this school year.
Volunteer times are Tuesday to Friday mornings, for a minimum of two hours.
