Speeding and pedestrian and bike safety were the three top traffic concerns that emerged from last week’s intensive community transportation study in Los Altos.
About 30-40 residents participated in the four-day study, which officials intend to use as a blueprint for the city’s future transportation plan.
City Planning Director James Walgren said adding more sidewalks or pedestrian pathways that are separated from the street were two suggestions included in a report from last week’s study.
He said most Los Altos streets don’t have sidewalks. The study group is suggesting that the city create pedestrian pathways along school routes.
The group also suggested making bike lanes more defined and clearly marked.
Participants said design elements, such as roundabouts, raised crosswalks and medians, would be key to slowing traffic rather than adding more stop signs or signals or diverting traffic to other streets.
The Los Altos City Council is scheduled to review the traffic report over the next four weeks, Walgren said.
If the council accepts the plan, it will be incorporated in the circulation element of the city’s updated General Plan.
A copy of the plan should be available at city hall in two weeks.
