Professional baseball, football, soccer and golf organizations canceled sporting events after the terrorist attacks; but for the most part, the games went on at local high schools.

Although some area schools canceled games and practices scheduled for Sept. 11, all of them resumed action the following day.

Of the six high schools the Town Crier covers - Los Altos, Mountain View, St. Francis, Pinewood, Gunn and Homestead - only Pinewood and Gunn canceled their full slate of Sept. 11 games.

The Pinewood School girls tennis team was supposed to travel to San Francisco to take on Mercy High School, while the volleyball team was set to play at Woodside Priory School.

Los Altos High School canceled volleyball and field hockey matches and elected to play girls tennis and girls water polo games.

St. Francis High School played all scheduled games except for field hockey, which was canceled by host Leland High School.

At Mountain View High School, Athletic Director Dan Navarro said school administrators didn’t even approach him about canceling games.

Homestead played its lone sporting event scheduled that day, a girls tennis match against Los Altos, and all other teams practiced.

“The consensus was it would be good for the kids to go on with their normal routines,” Homestead Athletic Director Charlie Bostic said.

Games that were canceled last week will be rescheduled, according to the respective athletic departments.
