Frank Brennan of Los Altos is scheduled to be inducted into the Stanford University Sports Hall of Fame this Friday.

Brennan coached Stanford’s women’s tennis team for 21 years (1980-2000). During his tenure, Brennan guided the Cardinal to 10 NCAA championships, including four in the 1980s, and posted a record of 510-50 (.911). Four of his teams went undefeated.

Brennan was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Coach of the Decade for both the 1980s and 1990s and NCAA Coach of the Decade for the 1990s . He coached nine NCAA singles champions, three NCAA doubles champions and one AIAW doubles champion.

Brennan also coached 40 different players to a total of 94 All-American honors and 22 players to 45 Pacific-10 Conference honors.

He is also a four-time National Coach of the Year and 10-time Pac-10 Conference Coach of the Year.

Stanford’s Class of 2001 also includes former football stars Gordy Ceresino, Brad Muster and Dave Wyman; women’s basketball standout Sonja Henning; baseball’s Mike Aldrete; volleyball standout Bev Oden; track & field Olympian Carol Cady; Olympic swimmers Summer Sanders and Jeff Kostoff; tennis star Linda Gates; diver Eileen Richetelli; and men’s basketball star Howard Wright.

“We’re very proud of the accomplishments of the Hall of Fame Class of 2001,” said Ted Leland, Stanford’s director of athletics. “This diverse group of former student-athletes is a great representation of the history of Stanford athletics. Their achievements made them natural choices for induction into the Stanford Hall of Fame.”

Stanford will honor the 13 inductees at a Hall of Fame dinner at 6 p.m., Friday, on the Stanford campus. They also will be honored during halftime of the Stanford-Arizona State football game on Saturday, which is set to kickoff at 7 p.m.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
