A clerk at a local liquor store fired gunshots at the getaway car of two gunmen who allegedly robbed the store moments earlier. Police were still searching last week for the men, who they believe escaped unharmed.

Mountain View police said the two gunmen allegedly held up Kara’s Liquors at 820 El Camino Real at 8:20 p.m., Sept. 1. One of the men, wearing a white handkerchief over his face, pulled out a handgun and ordered one of the two store employees on duty to give him money.

The second man went behind the store counter and beat the clerk several times with his fist before retrieving the money, police said.

The two men also took the wallet of the only customer in the store at the time of the robbery, before fleeing on foot, police said.

One of the clerks grabbed a handgun kept in the store and chased after the two men about one block to Moraga Drive and Sylvan Avenue to a waiting car. The clerk fired the gun, striking the car’s fuel tank as the men tried to flee.

Police believe the men could have escaped into Sunnyvale. Police were on the lookout for a dark -colored, lowered car with a new paint job. Police said they believe that due to the gunshot damage and ruptured fuel tank, the car will most likely need immediate repairs.

Anyone with information should call Mountain View Police Detective Dan Vicenio at 903-6714.
