The Alpine Hills Tennis and Swim Club in Portola Valley last month captured its first state championship in tennis since 1992, and two boys from Los Altos had a hand in it.

Local residents Ronald Wu and Greg Ringold were key members of the club’s victorious under-12 boys team, according to Alpine Hills’ coach and tennis pro Chris Bradley.

Wu went undefeated in doubles and singles at the USTA Northern California Junior League Championships and in the state finals, known as the Gar Glenney Cup.

“He might be the strongest No. 5 player I’ve had in the last 15 years and on the four other boys 12 championship teams,” Bradley said.

In doubles, Wu and Jamie Hutter clinched the cup with a 6-0, 6-0 win over a team from the Lido Isle Club of Newport Beach. Alpine Hills posted a 6-3 win over Lido Isle Aug. 26 at the Tiburon Peninsula Club.

A prior family commitment prohibited Ringold from competing in the state championship, but his win in the NorCal was instrumental in Alpine Hills qualifying for the Gar Glenney Cup.

“His two tiebreakers were very suspenseful with everyone from both teams and their fans watching and hanging on every point,” Bradley said.

Alpine Hills went on to beat Courtside Tennis Club of Los Gatos 6-3 Aug. 5 at the Natomas Racquet Club in Sacramento.

Ringold, playing No. 6 singles, pulled out a 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5) victory.

He later teamed with Wu for a 6-0, 7-5 win in doubles.

The Alpine Hills team also included Billy McCall, John Williford, David, McCall, Eric Blumenkranz, Matt Hubbell, Daniel Goldstein and Adam Davison.

In all, Alpine Hills has captured eight state championships.
