Hand-crafted work by 650 artists and craftmakers, music, food from around the globe, an array of wines and a host of activities for the entire family will be featured at this weekend’s 30th Annual Mountain View Art & Wine Festival.

One of the West Coast’s biggest festivals, nearly 200,000 people are expected to pour onto Castro Street Saturday and Sunday.

Ten bands are scheduled to perform over two days, playing rhythm and blues, rock ‘n’ roll, jazz, soul, disco and folk music. Performers include The Cool Jerks, Sage, Touch ‘N Go, SuperSqueeze, The Pat Tinney Group, Groovy Judy, Dreamroad, Aryeh Frankfurter, Groove Camp and Mad & Eddie Duran.

Festival-goers can meet and buy direct from artists’ handmade wares like vases, flatware, clocks, dishes, wall and table decorations, paperweights, stained and beveled glass, etchings, sculptures, photography, oil and watercolor paintings, beadwork, gold and silver jewelry, vests, handbags, hats, wallets, footwear, wind chimes and waterfalls.

The Kids Park will feature magicians, jugglers, comedy, exotic reptiles, puppet shows and music. There also will be hands-on art booths, a 24-foot climbing wall, temporary tattoos, face painting, giant balloon bounce, inflatable slide and Boomer’s Magic Circus.

Festival eateries will be dishing up everything from garlic chicken sandwiches, jambalaya, and gyros to fried calamari, corn-on-the-cob and gourmet sausages, accompanied by wines from nine wineries and special festival micro-brews from Tied House Cafe & Brewery.

Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., both days. Admission is free.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
