By History museum volunteer open house
The Los Altos History Museum is holding a volunteer open house for all prospective and current volunteers 5-7 p.m., Monday, at the museum, 51 S. San Antonio Road, Los Altos.
Current volunteers will be recognized while new visitors can hear about new volunteer opportunities.
The event will also feature prize drawings and refreshments.

Art docents need volunteers
Los Altos Art Docents are seeking volunteers for Los Altos School District programs for grades K-8, including lessons in art appreciation, clay, painting and graphic design.
Interested guests are invited to an introductory coffee scheduled for 10 a.m., today, at the district office, 201 Covington Road.

Westwind Barn annual ‘hoedown’
Westwind Barn’s annual “Hoedown” celebration is scheduled for 5-11 p.m., Saturday, at the barn, 27210 Altamont Road, Los Altos Hills, adjacent to Byrne Preserve.
The event features horseback riding performances, a barbecue dinner, silent auction, live country music and dancing.
The silent auction and raffle benefit the 4-H program for teaching disabled children to ride, as well as Westwind Barn preservation efforts.
Tickets are $20 for adults, $16 for children and seniors.

California natives focus of meeting
The Western Horticultural Society has scheduled their meeting 7 p.m., Sept. 12, in the multipurpose room at Loyola School, 770 Berry Ave., Los Altos.
Glenn Keator, California Natives’ author and teacher, and Airie Middlebrook, interior designer, will speak on “California Natives in Style.”
Admission is free, and visitors are welcome.
Adoption benefits seminar scheduled
Help One Child, a Los Altosbased non-profit organization, is sponsoring a free seminar to explain adoption benefits for foster children.
Helen Cavanaugh Stauts, project attorney and nationally recognized expert on subsidies and health-care benefits for adopted foster children, will speak. Adoption professionals and those interested in adopting are invited.

Stanford physician to address AAUW
Dr. Barbara Zylbert, Stanford Medical School graduate, is scheduled to be the guest speaker at the Los Altos-Mountain View Branch of the American Association of University Women, 10 a.m. to noon, Sept. 15, at Foothills Congregational Church, 461 Orange Ave., Los Altos.
Zylbert filed a gender bias lawsuit against the university and has applied for support from the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund. She will share her story and address the issue of prejudicial treatment of women in academia.
The meeting is free and open to the public. However, reservations are required.

Sisters-in-Crime authors Loretta Scott Miller and Frances Brodsky are scheduled to speak at a free program at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, in the Community Room at the Mountain View Public Library.
