Stella Simpson died Aug. 17 in Mountain View. A native of Chicago, she was 90.

Mrs. Simpson was a cook at Los Altos High School.

She was the widow of Fred J. Simpson. She is survived by her sons, Monroe and Charles of Los Altos; sister, Josephine Garbo of Mountain View; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; daughters-in-law, Gloria and Lizanne; and niece, Mary Grace Fumari.

Rosemary Lamb Leute

Rosemary Lamb Leute of Los Altos died Aug. 18. A native of North Dakota, she was 64.

Mrs. Leute worked as the graduate student administrator for the departments of philosophy and religious studies at Stanford University for the past 10 years.

She was previously a librarian at Oak School and a teacher at St. William’s school, both in Los Altos. She was also active with the Mountain View High School band.

Mrs. Leute graduated from Smith College in 1959. She later traveled and studied in Europe before pursuing her graduate degree in German literature at the University of California, Los Angeles, where she met her husband.

Mrs. Leute is survived by her husband, Richard K. Leute, and children, Kirsten of Mountain View and Eric.

Martin Synerholm

Martin Synerholm died Aug. 10 at his Los Altos home. A native of California, he was 86.

Mr. Synerholm was educated in Palo Alto public schools. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Stanford University in 1937 and his master’s degree in organic chemistry in 1940. He worked for many years as a research and teaching chemist.

He created beautiful gardens wherever he lived.

Mr. Synerholm was predeceased by his wife, Carolyn, in 1963 and his sister, Bernice Thornton, in 1977. He is survived by his daughters, Martha McSherry, Chris Wiersig of Los Altos, and Mary Watson; grandchildren, Frank, Carolyn and Elena McSherry, Douglas and William Wiersig, and Sarah and Carolyn Watson; step-granddaughter, Melissa McSherry; and nephew, Norton Thorton.

Paul Yates

Paul Yates, a former Los Altos resident, died July 30. A native of Maywood, Ill., he was 82.

Mr. Yates was a senior financial advisor with Merrill Lynch for 22 years. While living in Los Altos, he was a member of the Kiwanis Club and coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball.

Family members said Mr. Yates was a wonderful and loving father.

Mr. Yates is survived by his wife of 49 years, Milli; children, Suzanne Yates, Cindy Yates Schneider, Paul Yates and Douglas Yates; and grandchildren, Samantha Yates and Brynne and Max Schneider.
