By Council approves street upgrades

The Los Altos City Council recently approved upgrades for about 15 miles of public roadway.

O’Grady Paving of Mountain View is scheduled to resurface 3.5 miles of roadway scattered throughout Los Altos for $830,201 under the city’s annual street resurfacing project. Funds will come from the city’s Capital Projects Fund Reserve.

The city agreed to proceed with bidding of the biannual street slurry seal project, which will include sealing about 10-12 miles of streets. The city set aside $245,000 in the current budget for the project. The council was scheduled to decide Tuesday whether to hire CHEC Consultants for pavement inspection services for the project.

Slurry sealing includes applying a thin layer of oil, water and sand on the existing street’s surface. The seal is a preventative maintenance against early road failure.

Police crackdown on school traffic

Los Altos

Los Altos police will join a countywide crackdown on school traffic safety next month during the annual “Operation Safe Passage - 3,” Sept. 10-14.

The California Highway Patrol will partner with other agencies each day to saturate school zones within specific jurisdictions. Several teams of officers from various agencies within the county plan to patrol different regions of the county during the campaign to enforce traffic laws and educate commuters about traffic safety.

Enforcement teams will be on the lookout for motorists who don’t yield to pedestrians, speed, or don’t observe the school bus’ flashing red lights or seat belt laws. The school zone safety program is sponsored by the Santa Clara County Police Chiefs’ Association.
