By Music for Minors needs volunteers

Volunteers are needed to become music docents in local elementary schools, where music programs have been cut in the primary grades. Music for Minors is accepting applications from volunteers to join a dedicated team who teach music education to children in grades K ñ 3. You donít have to be a trained musician! Extensive training is provided on basic music theory, lesson planning, classroom management, rhythm and movement activities, and a variety of approaches to teaching music.

Music for Minors is hosting an information meeting about this exciting volunteer opportunity on Tuesday, August 28 from 9:30 ñ 11:00 a.m at the Hillview Community Center in Los Altos. Interviews for interested volunteers will take place at the meeting.

All volunteer docents receive a college-accredited training beginning in September. Classes typically run 2 1/2 hours long and are offered twice a week in Los Altos and San Mateo, beginning September 11 and running through November 29.

Persons with an interest in music, who have experience working with small groups of children and who can sing on pitch are encouraged to apply. Bilingual skills (English and Spanish) are a plus! Call Music for Minors at (650) 941-9130 for an application and information.

Music for Minors is a non-profit organization dedicated to nurturing in children a lifelong love of music.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
