By Financial and credit specialists to give talk

Clyde Kendzierski, United California Bank’s treasury and fixed income specialist, has planned a special presentation of the bank’s 2001 Economic Markets Forecast. The event will be held Sept. 6, 5:30-7:30 p.m., at United California Bank, 176 Main Street, in downtown Los Altos.

There will be a discussion on small business administration credit lines and commercial mortgage loans. Financial and credit specialists will be available to address questions.

Admission is free, but since seating is limited reservations are recommended.

Dennis Young named CalCPA chapter president

Los Altan Dennis A. Young has been elected 2001-02 president of the Peninsula Chapter of the California Society of Certified Public Accountants (CalCPA). CalCPA has 27,000 members in public practice, private industry, education and government. Young is the senior managing director of American Express Tax and Business Services Inc. on El Camino Real. He has also been active in the community, having served in the past as president of both the Festival of Lights and the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce. He is currently treasurer of the Los Altos Community Foundation and a member of the Rotary Club of Los Altos.

Entrepreneurs courses at Mid-Peninsula YWCA

The YWCA of the Mid-Peninsula’s Women Entrepreneurs Program has planned two courses for women and men interested in starting their own businesses. “Thinking of Becoming an Entrepreneur?” a three-session course that explores the realities of starting a business, is slated for 6-9 p.m., Thursdays, beginning Sept. 6. The cost is $49.

“Business Academy: How To Start Your Own Business,” a 10-week course for entrepreneurs ready to formulate or amend their business plans, is scheduled for 6-9 p.m., Thursdays, beginning Sept. 27. The cost is $150, including the textbook.

Preston’s Candy and Ice Cream wins Award

Irene and George Preston, owners of Preston’s Candy and Ice Cream in Burlingame, won the Silver Bowl Award in the “Best New Piece Idea” category at the annual Retail Confectioners International Candy Clinic, held recently in conjunction with the association’s 81st annual convention and industry exposition.

The Candy Clinic is a competition in 10 areas of merchandising, marketing and production. Preston’s Candy and Ice Cream is known in the area for its wide variety of quality boxed chocolates and other confections.

Its Los Altos branch is located at 235 First St.
