Maybe it’s time to eat in Los Altos again. Changes in the local restaurant scene at the Los Altos Bar and Grill and the peninsula’s newest landmark restaurant named “Z” should keep you in town.

Most notable is the return of Bob Clark to the Bar and Grill. The former owner has returned to help owner Loren Masters revamp the Bar and Grill to become the entertainment center of Los Altos.

“He was always the life of the party and people are glad he has come back,” Masters said. “He knows a lot of people in the community, and he is excited to come back.”

To celebrate Clark’s return, the Los Altos Bar and Grill has scheduled a welcoming party featuring entertainment, hors d’oeuvres and drink specials at 8:30 p.m., today.

Clark intends to reestablish Sunday bus trips to the 49er games at 3Com Park. In prior years, the trips were party before, party on the bus, party at the game and party after the game - win or lose.

“This is like the TV Cheers bar, only it’s in Los Altos,” Masters said. “The community congregates in the late afternoon, and most of the people all know each other.”

Masters returned to a menu featuring continental cuisine prepared by several new chefs.

In the immediate future, special wine dinners will be scheduled.

In a departure from usual restaurant practices, Masters is holding wine tasting by vintners 5:30-7:30 p.m. during the cocktail hour.

Happy hours continue 4:30-6:30 p.m., weekdays. Live entertainment starts nightly at 9:30 p.m. Friday night headlines classic rock with different bands, including D5.

“Z,” the newly remodeled restaurant at 127 First Street, is scheduled to open Aug. 25. The cuisine will be modern French.
