Melissa Diane Hoban and Shannon Harnan Murphy have announced their engagement to be married Sept. 8 at Ruby Hill Country Club.

The bride-to-be is the daughter of Bill and Laurie Hoban of Walnut Creek. She is a graduate of Carondelet High School and has a bachelor’s degree in communication from the University of California at Santa Barbara. She is employed at Microsoft.

The groom-to-be is the son of Ron Murphy of Mountain View and Diane Murphy of Los Altos. He graduated from Gunn High School and has a bachelor’s degree in business/finance from the University of California at Santa Barbara. He is employed at Screaming Media.

The couple plan to live in San Francisco.

Pearson, Roumbanis

Katherine Anna Pearson and Jason Alexander Roumbanis have announced their engagement to be married Saturday at Saint William Church, Los Altos. A reception will follow at the Fremont Hills Country Club.

The bride-to-be is the daughter of Rich Pearson of Los Altos Hills and Joan Alter of Los Altos. She graduated from Los Altos High School and earned a degree in business from California State University at Chico. She is employed at Idex Global Services, San Francisco.

The groom-to-be is the son of Frank and Kim Castwell of Littleton, Colo. He graduated from Los Altos High School and attended Foothill College. He is employed at American Science and Engineering, San Jose.

The couple live in Menlo Park.

Dawson, Saltzman

Erin Elizabeth Dawson and Joshua William Saltzman have announced their engagement to be married Sept. 29.

The bride-to-be is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas C. Dawson of Los Altos. She is the granddaughter of Vicky and the late Carlton W. Dawson of Cupertino and Elizabeth D. Vogt of Los Altos. She graduated from Los Altos High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and Chinese from the University of California at San Diego.

The groom-to-be is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Stephen

Saltzman of El Cajon. He is the grandson of Frances Saltzman of El Paso, Texas, and Roger Sweeney of Brownwood, Texas. He graduated from Valhalla High School in El Cajon and earned his bachelor’s degree in ecology, behavior and evolution from the University of California at San Diego.

The couple are living in Taiwan where the bride-to-be is a Los Altos Rotary International ambassador scholar studying Cantonese and speaking to Rotary organizations in Taipei.

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
