By Noted author visits Garden Club
Author and horticulturist Edward McRae will discuss “A Hybridizer’s View on Growing Gorgeous Lilies” at the Aug. 28 meeting of the Garden Club of Los Altos, Creekside Room, Los Altos United Methodist Church.
McRae is a native of Aberdeen, Scotland, and is a graduate of the Royal Horticultural School of the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh. His career as a lily hybridist has earned him the highest honors and awards from the North American Lily Society, the Royal Horticultural Society and, most recently, the Medal of Honor from the New Zealand Lily Society. He is also active in the Species Lily Preservation Group whose purpose is to help preserve the natural lily species scattered throughout the Northern Hemisphere.
The program starts at approximately 1:30 p.m. Visitors may attend for a $5 fee.
Environmental volunteers sought
The Environmental Volunteers of Palo Alto is seeking environmental volunteer docents. No experience is necessary, and volunteers may choose the days and times that fit their schedule. Mars mission topic for T&S series
The Technology and Society Committee’s biweekly Luncheon Speakers Series is scheduled for Tuesday, at the Golden Wok Restaurant, 895 Villa St., Mountain View. Norm Berube, a member of the Northern California Chapter of the Mars Society, will present a slide show, featuring Mars Direct, a plan for a Mars mission, and the Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station, a joint project with NASA for Mars analog research at the Houghton crater on Devon Island in Canada’s high Arctic.

History museum’s ice cream social
The Los Altos History Museum is holding “Music & Memories: Old-Fashioned Ice Cream Social” on Saturday, its third annual hand-turned, hand-churned ice cream social with games, toys, and fun. This event is scheduled 2-4 p.m., with free admission.

Gubernatorial candidate at SPARC meeting
The South Peninsula Area Republican Coalition (SPARC) has scheduled William E. Simon Jr. to speak 6-8:30 p.m., Tuesday, in the Lanai Room of the Elks Lodge, 4249 El Camino Real, Palo Alto. Simon, who favors tax cuts and proposes solutions to California’s water and power shortages, has declared his intention to seek the Republican party nomination for governor in the 2002 gubernatorial.

C.A.R. author’s luncheon scheduled
For the 10th year, authors, poets and historians will be recognized at the C.A.R. Authors’ Luncheon, scheduled for 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Nov. 3, at Hyatt Rickeys, 4291 El Camino Real, Palo Alto.
Authors and the public will have a chance to support seven specialty programs. These include the Infant Program and an adult day program, L.E.A.R.N., both having to do with special opportunities for developmental disabilities. This exciting event also benefits the Community Association for Rehabilitation, a Palo Alto-based company that endures the accomplishments of those with developmental disabilities.
The luncheon features five acclaimed authors who will share their stories, and their experiences in writing, or will give some understanding to their characters. As well as the luncheon, there will be other events such as a book sale, a chance to meet the authors and author signings.
The C.A.R. Authors’ luncheon annually raises a well-deserved $50,000 and hopes to continue that to sustain the many programs. Tickets are $75 per person.

History Museum seeks volunteers
The Los Altos History Museum is looking for museum store sales volunteers, tour docents, resource volunteers and interns. Sales volunteers and docents are needed from noon to 4 p.m., Thursday through Sunday. Check www.losaltoshistory.org

Leadership course offered to residents
Leadership Education Advancement is accepting applications for the 2001-2002 series, a community involvement education course aimed at Los Altos Area residents interested in learning more about their community and how to become more involved.
The course is sponsored by the Los Altos Community Foundation and organized by volunteers from the foundation board.
The eight-month course is scheduled to meet 7-9 p.m., the fourth Monday of each month, except December, from Sept. 24 through May.
Meetings are held in community locations relating to the topic of the month, and appropriate guest speakers will lead discussions.
Topics include local government, commerce, education, the library and the history museum. Community services and volunteer opportunities will also be highlighted.
