A CHAMPION GOLFER AMONG US: Ruth Chu started playing golf just three years ago, and has already won the nine and 18-hole tournaments at the Los Altos Country Club when she was invited as a guest! Her husband, Lawrence Chu, said, “Ruth’s desire and determination is very strong, and she also loves the game.” We all wish we could have a hobby that motivates us in the same way! Congrats, Ruth!

FABULOUS FOOD TASTING: The dinner committee for Hidden Villa’s annual Josephine and Frank Duveneck Humanitarian Awards Dinner in Los Altos Hills, took a drive into San Francisco for a fabulous tasting held at Now We’re Cooking, with catering owner, Lawrence Whiting. Event Chairwoman Jan Fenwick, Food/Wine Chairwoman Eleanor Watanabe and their committee of tasters, Karen Ross, Diane Sagalowicz, Mady Kahn, Shannon McEntee enjoyed every bite! The event is scheduled for Sept. 22 - please join us!

A BOOK WRITTEN BY A SPECIAL PERSON: Kay Peterson has been a resident of Woodland Acres for 50 years. Her second book, “Sunnyvale Collage II,” contains 435 pages of stories and photos of longtime residents of the community, including historical background information and the important early citizens of the surrounding communities. She taught in the Sunnyvale district for 20 years and received recognition for founding the “School Docent Program” in 1983, in addition to many other awards. Congratulations, Kay! Kudos to her husband, Keith, for taking over the many household duties, and to son, Bruce, for his untiring and persistent effort in interpreting rough notes, newsprint and photos.

HOORAY, IT’S HERMAN’S BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION: Herman Hijmans recently had a birthday and celebrated with good friends over dinner at the Gondola Restaurant in town. The dinner turned into a special evening of surprise and celebration. Congratulations, and here’s wishing you many, many more birthdays!

A FAMILIAR FACE ON HAWAIIAN AIRLINES FLIGHT: Gordon-Biersch’s Dan Gordon, raised in Los Altos, was on every Hawaiian Airlines flight, in a video documentary called the “Dan Gordon Story.” Gordon-Biersch beer is promoted and served on all their flights. Gordon loved cookbooks, especially Japanese cookbooks, and was an excellent cook at the age of nine. After graduating from University of California, Berkeley, majoring in economics and five years in Germany at the Wiehenstephan as a brew master, Dan graduated with a degree as a brewing engineer. Dean Biersch and Dan own a large brewing facility in Japan- town, San Jose, where all the bottling is done.

Dan is an intelligent, friendly, approachable, nice guy who loves his family, people, sushi, beer and new recipe, “Garlic French Fries,” sold at the ball games! He is our “hometown boy” who has done well.
