By A new look at the Ten Commandments

Los Altos United Methodist Church, 655 Magdalena Ave., at Foothill Expressway, continues its contemporary worship service, Creekside Crossings, at 6 p.m. every Sunday this summer.

The series, running through Sept. 2, will explore “The Ten Commandments or the 10 Suggestions?” The Creekside Worship Band, led by Dirk Damonte, will lead the services with sing-along music from today’s top artists.

‘Arts Alive’ at United Methodist

Los Altos United Methodist Church, 655 Magdalena Ave., will hold their 16th annual art show, “Arts Alive 2001,” Aug. 26 in the Creekside Center. If you create original artwork and would like to exhibit, contact Nancy Roslund, 948-1083, ext. 128.

Community celebrates Akselrad’s 80th

Congregation Beth Am and the community celebrated Rabbi Sidney Akselrad’s 80th birthday June 23. More than 300 people attended the pre-concert dinner and 500 were at the evening’s program.

Akselrad was honored as the intellectual and spiritual catalyst who inspired graduates of his lecture series on social justice and human relations to become rabbis themselves.

Several of his graduates honored Akselrad at the celebration including Janine Schloss, Renee Bauer, Jeff Kaye, Sandy Akselrad and Evan Goodman. They described how he taught by example.

His many contributions were commemorated in a musical program divided into the chronological sections of his life.

Akselrad described the evening as “superb.”

El Retiro retreats

The El Retiro San Inigo Jesuit Retreat House in Los Altos is scheduled to hold “Love Is What Matters,” a retreat for women, Aug. 17-19. The event, led by Gavin Griffith, deals with increasing our ability to give and receive love.

“Acquiring Emotional Honesty,” a retreat for men and women, is scheduled for Aug. 31-Sept. 2. Led by Thomas Allender, this retreat focuses on emotional honesty.
