San Jose Earthquakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon of Los Altos Hills has been voted to start Saturday’s Major League Soccer All-Star Game. Cannon will be in goal for the West team, which takes on the East at 12:30 p.m. at San Jose’s Spartan Stadium. Cannon, a St. Francis High graduate, is the first goalie in the history of the San Jose franchise to make the all-star contest. Stanford swingers
The Bank of the West Classic runs through Sunday at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium at Stanford University. The Women’s Tennis Association tour event began Monday with a 28-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles draw. Total prize money up for grabs is $565,000. The singles field includes two-time Wimbledon singles champion Venus Williams, Lindsay Davenport, Monica Seles and Kim Clijsters. Williams won the Bank of the West title last year and Davenport won it in 1999. Now in its 31st year, the Bank of the West is the oldest women-only pro tennis tournament in the world.
