The Mountain View Babe Ruth 15-year-old All-Star Team finished as runner-up in the recent District 6 Championship Tournament.
After beating host Palo Alto 4-2 in the opening round and San Mateo 4-3 in the semifinals, Mountain View went into the final round as the only undefeated team remaining in the double-elimination tournament.
Palo Alto stunned Mountain View, though by winning back-to-back games for the title.
Palo Alto beat Mountain View 2-0 July 12, forcing the deciding game the next day at Baylands Park. Palo Alto won that game 4-3 in extra innings.
Mountain View got off to a good start July 13, as Donnie Ecker scored in the first inning on Bobby Scott’s RBI single.
But Palo Alto came right back with two runs in its half of the inning. In the fifth, Palo Alto increased its lead to 3-1.
But Mountain View didn’t panic. “I actually thought we could come back,” pitcher Scott Naylor said, “because our team had a lot of heart.”
Mountain View came back in the sixth inning to tie the score at 3, getting runs from Cody Garcia and Ryan Lara.
But Palo Alto refused to give up, scoring a run in its half of the eighth to win the championship and move on to the sectional tournament in Eureka.
