Fiji is a archipelago of more than 300 islands scattered over 230,000 miles of the South Pacific with a diversity of people to meet and places to see. “Bula” means hello, and you hear it constantly. Couples, families, honeymooners and divers attracted to its world-class diving locations can all find something for them in the Fiji Islands.
If someone has already been to Hawaii, then we recommend Fiji, or the Cook islands. The prices are more reasonable, and it’s worth the flight time, about the same as if you going to Europe. They are also more reasonably priced than the Tahitian islands.
Taking into account all of Fiji’s outstanding visitor attractions such as its beauty, its unspoiled environment, its outstanding coral reefs and gardens and many other points of interest, one stands out above all the others - the genuine friendliness of the Fijian people.
The islands have lowered their prices since tourism stopped amid political unrest last year and tipping is not encouraged in Fiji.
Having been there several times, I prefer the outer islands to staying on Viti Levu, and the big hotel chains of the Coral Coast, where the Nadi Airport is located. There are numerous islands from which to choose. There are individual deluxe bures with king size beds, twin showers and huge sun decks. Cuisine is prepared by internationally acclaimed chefs and emphasis on local culture with tours to nearby villages.
The price varies depending on the island, and each has something special to offer. The climate is tropical, tempered by prevailing southeast trade winds. The hottest months are December to April, when the humidity levels are high.
This trip, we island-hopped by small plane, looking at hideaway locations for families and honeymooners. When you arrive at an island, the staff of the resort forms a greeting party, with music and singing to make you feel very welcome.
If you arrive by seaplane, then this ceremony takes place on the beach where you get a Fijian lei and a fruit punch. When we were at Namale, the staff was preparing for a wedding, where the bride is carried in on a flowered platform by tall warriors. A choir of celebrated singers accompanies the beating of the drums.
Fiji offers unsurpassed opportunities for exploration with scheduled three-, four- or seven-day cruises. There are world-renowned cruises to the famous Yasawa Islands, twice the setting for the movie, “The Blue Lagoon.” Cruises also operate to the Mamanuca Islands and other equally spectacular destinations. But you will enjoy Fiji, no matter which island you go to.
