The Los Altos Majors All-Stars made history last week, becoming the first Los Altos/Los Altos Hills Little League Majors team to win the District 44 championship.

Los Altos brought home the title trophy July 17 with an 8-2 win over Campbell at Washington Park in Sunnyvale. Majors consist of 11- and 12-year-olds.

Los Altos, which went undefeated (5-0) in the double-elimination tournament, jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Campbell pulled within 4-2 in the fourth, but Los Altos responded with four runs in the next inning to put the game away.

Erik “E2″ Johnson pitched all six innings for Los Altos, allowing only five hits.

Johnson helped his cause by going 4-for-4 at the plate, as did Troy Hartter. Scott Dawes drove in three runs in the fifth with a double to left with the bases loaded.

In the July 12 semifinals, Los Altos clobbered Campbell 16-6 in a game called after four innings on the mercy rule.

Los Altos led 5-0 after the first inning, but Campbell rallied to take a 6-5 lead an inning later. Los Altos recovered with 11 runs over the next three innings to secure the win.

Hartter earned the win from the mound, setting down Campbell in order in the third and fourth innings.

Los Altos had 13 hits in the game, led by the hot bats of EJ Johnson (3-for-4) Kellen McColl (2-for-3) and Kurt Kaszubinski (2-for-4, three RBIs).

Also helping the cause were Andrew Geenen, Adam Lanthier, Evan Sanders, Mike van Bronkhorst, Isaac Wilhelm and Danny Young. Mark Geenen managed the squad, assisted by coaches Craig Young and Dean Johnson.

11-year-old All-Stars

Los Altos rallied in the sixth and final inning, but came up a tad short in its bid to beat Campbell for the Tri-Cities Tournament championship July 10.

Los Altos fell 4-3 to Campbell, which led most of the game.

Los Altos won two games to get to the final round of the single-elimination event. Throughout the competition, the team received strong pitching from Kiley Libuit, Alex O’Connor and Scott Russell. In the second game, Russell pitched all six innings for the victory.

The pitching staff was helped by solid defense from Evan De Jarnette, Andy Meek and Connor Smith, plus catchers Luke Bergevin and Spencer Fletcher.

Offensively, Los Altos was led by power hitter Sam Drexler.

Also contributing were Trent Bowers, Albie La Poll, Mitch McGillis and Matt Rigodanzo. Steve Smith managed the team, assisted by coaches Richard O’Connor and Larry Russell.

9-10 All-Stars

Los Altos lost 13-7 to Moreland in the July 18 championship game at Earl Carmichael Park in Santa Clara.

Moreland, which finished with 14 hits, scored eight runs in the second inning.

Los Altos got within 9-7 in the third, then Moreland pulled away with four runs in the sixth.

Carter Lyman led the Los Altos offense, going 2-for-2 with a double.
