Summer League Baseball Update

alo Alto Post 375 is a young team with no superstars - just a solid group of players, according to coach Tony Brewer.

Yet, entering this week, the American Legion baseball team found itself tied with Monta Vista for first place with six league games remaining.

“I think we’ve surprised a lot of people,” Brewer said. “We’re playing pretty well. We’re getting good pitching and timely hitting.”

And Brewer is confident his team will only get better.

“They don’t know how good they can be,” he said. “They’re still jelling.”

Post 375 raised its league record to 8-3 on Sunday by sweeping a doubleheader against visiting Redwood City.

Palo Alto won the first game 8-2, as Mountain View High graduate Gordon Pendergrass allowed one earned run to get the win. Gunn grad Ray Hunter picked up the save.

Another Gunn alum, Anthony Rea, hit a single and two doubles and had four RBI.

Post 375 (10-8 overall) came away with a 7-2 win in the second game.

Rea, Andrew Smith, Colby Henard and St. Francis’ Dan Graviano each hit a double and drove in a run. Eric Zawojski added a single and two RBIs.

Starting pitcher Henard earned the win.

Post 375 hosts South City at 7 p.m. today at Baylands Park in Palo Alto, then travels to Pacifica on Saturday for a noon game at Oceana High.

Oaks sweep, too

The Palo Alto Oaks won both ends of a doubleheader against host Contra Costa on Sunday.

The Stan Musial League team prevailed 18-6 and 10-3 to up its overall record to 9-3.

The Oaks produced 18 hits in the first game, including three by Los Altos High graduate Victor Ambruso.

In Game 2, Oaks starter Jerrell Taylor had a shutout going until the seventh and final inning when Contra Costa scored three runs.

The Oaks, coached by Tony Majkavich, host the Fremont Bulldogs in a doubleheader scheduled for 11:30 a.m., Sunday, at Baylands.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
