Julia Randall, a 2001 graduate of Homestead High, was awarded a $1,000 grant by Mervyn’s and the Women’s Sports Foundation Scholarship Fund last month.

She was among 26 recent high school graduates in the San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose area to receive a grant. Nationally, Randall was one of 286 winners out of a pool of more than 2000 applicants.

Winners were chosen for their participation in athletics, as well as community and leadership activities.

The purpose of the scholarship is to provide financial support to graduating female high school student-athletes who will be pursuing a full-time course of study at an accredited two or four year college. Randall will attend UC Santa Cruz in the fall.

Randall was a standout center on the Homestead girls basketball team, earning first-team all-SCVAL De Anza Division honors the past two seasons.
