AN EXTRAORDINARY AFTERNOON WITH A BRILLIANT ARTIST: On June 2, Jon Nakamatsu, “local hero” and world-renowned gold medalist of the prestigious 1997 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, delighted a special gathering of guests with his brilliant and dazzling performance at the beautiful Los Altos Hills home of hosts and CSMA board of sponsor members, Jan and Bob Fenwick. This event was in celebration of the Community School of Music and Arts’ project to build the Center for Arts Education, which will become the permanent home for the 33-year-old non-profit organization.

Some of the guests at the private party were Angela and Rick McConnell, Anita and Judge Les Nichols, Kay and Bill Krause, Sue and Bob Larson, Ginger and George Summit, Nobuko Cleary, Liz and Paul Nyberg, Judy Fan and Bob Reay (board chairman), Eppie Lam, Barbara Cohn, Dr. Nicholas Isaacs, Sally and George Kladnik, Ruth and Roy Rogers, Mike Couch, Marlene and Duane Dunwoodie, Sheryl Heckman, Denise and Richard Williams, John Chowning, Debbie Pao, Diana Chan and Evy and Neal Schiffman.

MARY AND JACK’S GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY AND THE ROAD TO GOLD: A June 14 celebration to honor Mary and Jack Davey’s 50 years of marriage was sponsored by the Davey family and Green Foothills Foundation, of which Mary Davey is the “heart and soul.” Many friends, family and supporters gathered in Woodside at the Mounted Patrol Grounds.

LOVELY PARTY TO CELEBRATE 50 YEARS AND TO HONOR PAST PRESIDENTS: On June 1, a “VIP Champagne Reception” was hosted by Abigail Ahrens and her daughters, in their lovely French garden estate, to honor past presidents of the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce. Twenty past presidents attended, including Jean Hastings Miller, Jim Reynolds, Kent Barber and Carol Caulkins McCune. Walt Chronert was recognized for taking disabled children for the last 30 years to the “Special Games” program at De Anza College.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
