Council extends cable talks 6 months
The Los Altos City Council extended the city’s cable franchise agreement with AT&T another six months, until Dec. 31. This is the third extension that the council has approved since beginning negotiations with AT&T in December, 1999, when AT&T acquired the city’s cable service, TeleCommunications Inc.
The city has been working on a deal with AT&T over the past two years to bring high-speed Internet lines and sleeker cable connections to Los Altos.
City officials said negotiations were continuing, but were not likely to be completed before the end of June, when the last extension was scheduled to expire.
“The response from AT&T representatives has been slower than we had hoped for. Our negotiator believes that the AT&T representatives may not be eager to reach agreement with smaller communities until renewal agreements with larger franchises, such as San Jose and Oakland, are completed,” Senior Planner Jim Mackenzie said in a staff report.

Council approves retirement benefits
The Los Altos City Council unanimously agreed to implement a new retirement plan for the city’s police officers, called “3%@50.” The improved plan is part of the three-year contract Los Altos city hall and police union officials agreed upon last year after months of tumultuous labor negotiations. The city had agreed during labor negotiations to implememnt the “3%@50″ plan as soon as five out of 10 area police agencies adopted the same plan. Milpitas, Santa Clara, Los Gatos, Mountain View and Sunnyvale have the plans in place. The plan will allow officers to collect 3 percent of their annual salary per year of service upon retirement.
