The 12th Annual Second Harvest Food Bank Golf Tournament is scheduled for July 9 at Stanford University Golf Course. The benefit tournament features 18 holes of golf with a shared cart, tee prizes, lunch, a cocktail reception and an awards banquet with a raffle and auction. Players can also compete for prizes in the longest drive, closest-to-pin and hole-in-one contests. Cost is $300 for individual players, $550 to be a corporate sponsor with tee signage. Girls soccer camp

The Bay Area CyberRays are offering two soccer camps for girls ages 8-16 next week at West Valley College in Saratoga. CyberRays players and coaches will be instructing players in skills and strategies. Each camper will receive a soccer ball, CyberRays T-shirt and 2 tickets to the CyberRays July 8 home match vs. New York. Camps will go from 2-5 p.m. and 5-8 p.m., Sunday through Tuesday. Volleyball signups

The United States Youth Volleyball League is registering players through Aug. 15 for an eight-week program that begins Sept. 11 at Houge Park in San Jose.The USYVL is an instructional league that operates in a coed format for boys and girls ages 8-14, offering every player a chance to learn and play volleyball in a safe, supervised, low-pressure environment. Wanted: coaches

Los Altos High is looking for several coaches for the next school year. The Eagles need a girls varsity basketball coach, a junior varsity girls water polo coach and assistants for varsity football (line coach) and track and field (shot put/discus). Get ship-shape

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary offers a boating skills and seamanship class, starting Monday at the Mountain View Senior Center, 266 Escuela St. Learn boat handling, safety and legal requirements, aids to navigation, weather, trailering, knots and line handling, engines and navigation rules. The 13-session class will meet 7-9 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays. Instruction is free, but textbook and materials cost $40. Pilates classes

Pilates group mat classes to increase flexibility and build strength without bulk are being offered by trainer Nancy Chan at Back to Fitness, 3906 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto. PA sports camp

The Palo Alto Sports Camp is offering three two-week sessions for students entering grades 3-7. The camp runs 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., weekdays, Monday through Aug. 2 at Gunn High in Palo Alto. There will be instruction in basketball, flag football, track and field, soccer, ultimate Frisbee, swimming, tennis and more. The staff is made up of graduates of Palo Alto and Gunn highs. Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
