Local IBM employee honored

Vern L. Watts, an engineer with IBM Silicon Valley Lab and resident of Los Altos, recently received a Corporate Award from Lou Gerstner, CEO of IBM Corporation. The award honored his technical achievements and dedication in readying one of IBM’s premier transaction and database management systems for the era of e-business.

More than 90 percent of Fortune 1000 companies use IBM’s Information Management System (IMS) to process over 50 billion transactions every day and manage over 15 billion gigabytes of critical business data. Foreseeing the changes that the Internet would bring, Watts, the chief architect, led the way in transforming IMS into a platform for Web-based, high-workload applications.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
