The El Camino YMCA in Mountain View will team up with Britannia Soccer USA next week for a youth soccer clinic.

The clinic, for ages 5-18, is scheduled for June 18-22 on the soccer field at Mountain View High, 3535 Truman Ave.

The five-day soccer camp is becoming an annual event in the area.

“(It has taken place) for three to four years that I know of, and was very successful,” said Carlos Mercado of the El Camino YMCA.

Britannia Soccer USA, established in 1984, aims to develop players’ skills through drills and other instruction.

The organization’s motto is “success through enjoyment for all players.”

The instructors include professional soccer coaches and former players from the United Kingdom.

“Trainers spend time with each individual kid to improve soccer skills,” Mercado said.

These trainers will also get a chance to learn more about Americans by staying with host families in the area next week.

Players interested in the clinic can sign up for either the full-day (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) or half-day (9 a.m. to noon or 1-4 p.m.) clinic.

The camp is customized in accordance with the abilities of the players.

There is a fundamental skill development program for ages 5-7, progressive skill development for ages 8-12 and advanced skill development for ages 13-18.

The cost is $165 for the full-day clinic, and $120 for the half-day camp.

There also will be a pair of free clinics for coaches and parents during the week.

For more information about the clinic or housing a coach, call Mercado at 969-9622 or Britannia Soccer at (888) 551-4366.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
