The Los Altos City Council is considering the possibility of having the gymnasium at Egan Intermediate School renovated as soon as next year, at the same time as a planned renovation for the Blach Junior High gym.
Council members met last week to discuss the feasibility of doing Egan and Blach at the same time and having an architect draw up preliminary plans.
The discussion comes as the Los Altos School District faces another year’s delay in its facilities construction at Egan.
The district plan was to house Egan students in temporary facilities called “portable classrooms” for one year while the campus was being renovated.
Then each district elementary school would be housed at the portable classrooms, one year at a time, while Egan students were to go into their newly renovated classrooms.
But the district’s one-year delay means Egan students will continue in the portable classrooms, allowing “a window of opportunity,” said City Manager Phil Rose, for the city to have the gymnasium renovated.
City officials have noted a cost savings and logistics advantage to renovating both gyms at the same time.
City and school district officials have partnered on a $4.5 million plan, that the city would fund, to renovate both gymnasiums for school and community use.
