May 30 was a memorable day in the Jensen household.

Michael Jensen qualified for the National Independent Insurance Agents Junior Classic and his brother Chris scored a hole in one.

The Los Altos residents accomplished their feats at the local qualifier for the IIAJC, played in weather near 100 degrees at De Laveaga Golf Course in Santa Cruz.

Chris, a seventh grader at St. Simon School, recorded his first-ever ace on the third hole, a 150-yard, par 3.

“I’ve always been pretty good with my short irons,” the 13-year-old said.

Although his final score of 84 did not qualify in a field of primarily older players (15-17) competing for the eight spots in the state tournament, Chris did finish third in his age group.

Older brother Michael, a 15-year-old freshman at St. Francis High, completed his round with a score of 76 to qualify.

“I missed a few putts, but I qualified, so I’ll work on my game and hope to advance in the next round to play in the national finals,” Michael said.

Next month’s state final will consist of the top 10 percent of qualifiers (approximately 120 golfers) from the 19 regional qualifying tournaments in California. The state tournament will be held at De Laveaga. The top six finishers advance to the national final, scheduled for August at the University of Michigan Golf Course in Ann Arbor.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
