Radio amateurs or “hams” across the nation will celebrate Field Day June 23-24, during which they will attempt to contact as many other hams as possible using radio stations in field conditions.

The annual event is intended to exercise amateur operating skills in conditions resembling those that might prevail after a major disaster.

In emergencies, radio amateurs have rendered communication services to support public safety agencies.

The Foothills Amateur Radio Society, one of several clubs in this area, will participate in this year’s Field Day event, operating by voice, Morse code, radio teletype, satellite and digital packet radio.

The 24-hour event begins at 11 a.m. on June 23, next to the Maryknoll Residence, 23000 Cristo Rey Drive, Los Altos. Visitors will be welcome.

For more information, call Jack Eddy, FARS president, at (408) 729-6483 or Omri Serlin, FARS radio officer, at (408) 253-2580.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
