The Underground, The Los Altos Recreation Department’s drop-in teen center, kicks off its summer season with a barbecue June 16 for students in grades 7-12.
Free hamburgers and hot dogs will be served while they last.
Next Thursday, from 3- 5 p.m. The Underground will also be hosting a preview day for kids currently in sixth grade.
“We have a lot of new things coming into the center,” said Robert Acosta, recreation coordinator.
“The Federated Women’s Club of Los Altos gave us $500 and a parent donated $100.”
With that donation, the center was able to buy a PlayStation 2,
(a video game system) and some games, he said.
Open since May 1994, The Underground also has a pool table, foosball, Nintendo 64 and Dreamcast video game systems, air hockey, computers, a big screen TV and food and drinks students can purchase.
“It’s their own place,” said Acosta. “Parents can feel safe. It’s a city program and there is always (recreation) staff there.”
The Underground is located in the basement of the Garden House at Shoup Park, 400 University Ave., near downtown Los Altos.
Beginning June 14, operating hours are noon to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday. For more information, call The Underground at 917-1332.
