The California Youth Symphony Percussion Ensemble will perform a free concert at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, in the Smithwick Theatre at Foothill College, 12345 El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills.

Program highlights include three Puerto Rican songs composed by Morris Lang, performed by guest Soprano Aja Gianola-Bland and accompanied by the lively rhythms and sounds of the Caribbean.

Percussionist David Morgenthaler, 16, of Palo Alto will be featured in the “Concerto for Drum Set and Percussion Ensemble” by John Beck.

Also on the program:

“Mexican Indian Toccata for Percussion” by Carlos Chavez.

The third movement from “Amores” by John Cage.

“Quartet for Paper Bags” by Larry Spivack.

“Antiphonal Trio for Three Snare Drums” by Margolis.

“Samba Classico” by Cirone.

“Two Frescos” by Spears.

“Mosaics” by Del Borgo.

The CYS Percussion Ensemble is composed of members of the California Youth Symphony’s Senior and Associate Orchestras, plus other talented percussion students from Bay Area schools.

CYS percussion director Artie Storch is an active freelance percussionist who performs with the San Francisco and San Jose Symphonies, for musical theater, and with ensembles that have ranged from Masterworks Chorale to Metallica.. Storch teaches percussion and drums privately and at California State University at Hayward, where he also directs the percussion ensemble.

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
